The VACTERL association (also VATER association, and less accurately VACTERL syndrome) refers to a recognized group of birth defects which tend to co-occur (see below). Note that this pattern is a recognized association, as opposed to a syndrome, because there is no known pathogenetic cause to explain the grouped incidence.

VACTERL association is a nonrandom association of birth defects that affects multiple anatomical structures. The term VACTERL is an acronym with each letter representing the first letter of one of the more common findings seen in affected children: (V) = (costo-) vertebral abnormalities (A) = anal atresia VACTERL association is a condition with multisystem congenital malformations: Vertebral anomalies (V), anal atresia (A), cardiac malformation (C), tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TE) with or without oesophageal atresia, renal dysplasia (R) and limb abnormalities (L). 1 VACTERL association In medical terms, an ‘association’ is a group of symptoms that appear together more often than would be expected by chance. This page from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) explains the causes, symptoms and treatment of VACTERL association (also known as VATER association) and where to get help. Overview. VACTERL association is a non-random association of birth defects that affects multiple parts of the body. The term VACTERL is an acronym with each letter representing the first letter of one of the more common findings seen in affected individuals: (V) = vertebral abnormalities; (A) = anal atresia; (C) = cardiac (heart) defects; (T) = tracheal anomalies including tracheoesophageal VATER syndrome, also known as VACTERL association, is a term used when a child is diagnosed with birth defects in three or more body parts.

The VACTERL association (also VATER association) refers to the non-random co-occurrence of birth defects V ertebral anomalies, A nal atresia, C ardiac defects, T racheoesophageal fistula and/or E sophageal atresia, R enal & R adial anomalies and L imb defects. The association is called VACTERL if the heart (cardiac) and limbs are also affected. As this is very commonly the case, VACTERL is often the more accurate term. To be diagnosed with VATER or VATER is a mnemonically useful acronym for the nonrandom association of vertebral defects (V), anal atresia (A), tracheoesophageal fistula with esophageal atresia (TE), and radial or renal dysplasia (R). This combination of associated defects was pointed out by Quan and Smith (1972).
